The Pacific Northwest presents unique challenges and opportunities for lawn care. Our mild, wet winters and dry summers require a different approach than other regions. Here are expert tips from Green Mount Landscape LLC to keep your lawn thriving.
Mow at the right height. In the PNW, keep your grass at 2.5 to 3 inches tall. Taller grass develops deeper roots, retains moisture better during dry spells, and naturally crowds out weeds. Never remove more than one-third of the blade length at a time.

Water deeply but infrequently. During summer dry spells, water your lawn 1-2 times per week with about an inch of water each session. Early morning watering reduces evaporation and disease risk. Avoid daily light watering, which encourages shallow roots.
Aerate in the fall. Pacific Northwest soils — especially the clay-heavy varieties common around Woodland — tend to compact. Fall aeration improves drainage, reduces thatch, and lets nutrients reach the root zone. Follow up with overseeding for a thicker lawn.
Fertilize strategically. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in early fall and again in late spring. Avoid heavy fertilization in summer when grass is stressed by heat. Organic options work well in our climate and improve soil health over time.
