Spring is the most important time for lawn care in the Pacific Northwest. The steps you take now set the tone for your lawn's health and appearance for the entire growing season.

Start with a thorough cleanup. Rake up leaves, twigs, and debris that accumulated over winter. This prevents mold growth and allows air and sunlight to reach the grass. Remove any dead patches and loosen matted areas.

Test and amend your soil. PNW soils are often acidic. A simple pH test can tell you if you need to apply lime to bring the pH into the optimal range (6.0-7.0) for grass growth. Most lawns benefit from a spring lime application.

Apply pre-emergent weed control before soil temperatures reach 55°F consistently. This creates a barrier that prevents weed seeds from germinating. Timing is critical — too early or too late reduces effectiveness.

Begin mowing when grass reaches about 3 inches. Set your mower to remove no more than one-third of the blade. Keep mower blades sharp for clean cuts that resist disease. Start with a higher cutting height and gradually lower it.
