Knowing when to trim your trees is just as important as knowing how. In Washington state, the timing of tree care depends on the species, the type of pruning needed, and the tree's overall health.

For most deciduous trees, the best time to prune is during late winter dormancy — typically January through early March. During this period, trees are less susceptible to disease, wounds heal faster when spring growth begins, and the bare canopy makes it easier to see the branch structure.

Evergreen trees, which are abundant in our Pacific Northwest landscape, can generally be pruned year-round. However, light pruning in late spring after new growth has hardened off produces the best results. Avoid heavy pruning of evergreens in late summer or fall, as this can stimulate tender new growth that's vulnerable to early frost.

Dead, damaged, or diseased branches should be removed as soon as they're noticed, regardless of the season. These branches pose safety risks and can spread disease to healthy parts of the tree. Storm-damaged limbs are a common issue in our region and should be addressed promptly.
